How to win a "credit not processed" chargeback
The customer says they were promised a refund that never arrived. To win, you need to show that the refund was issued, or that they weren't entitled to one under the policy they accepted.
Reason codes
| Network | Code |
|---|---|
| Visa | 13.6 Credit Not Processed |
| Mastercard | 4853 Cardholder Dispute (credit not processed) |
| American Express | C02 Credit Not Processed |
| Stripe label | credit_not_processed |
Evidence that wins it
- Refund receipt with date and amount, if issued (key)
- Refund policy shown at checkout (key)
- Proof the item was never returned, or arrived damaged/outside the window
- Messages where you explained the refund decision (key)
If you already refunded, attach the refund receipt; a refund issued before the dispute usually ends it immediately.
What your letter should argue
Either the refund was already issued, or the customer was not entitled to one under the refund policy they accepted before purchase. Then list each piece of proof as a numbered exhibit, so the reviewer at the bank can match your words to your files.
Before you fight
- Check the respond-by date on the dispute. Late responses lose automatically.
- In the US, Stripe keeps its $15 dispute fee either way, and charges another $15 when you submit evidence, returned if you win. Work out if it's worth it.
- You get one submission. Gather everything first.
