How to win a "subscription canceled" chargeback
The customer says they cancelled, or were charged again without agreeing. To win, you need to show that they agreed to the renewal terms and didn't cancel before this charge.
Reason codes
| Network | Code |
|---|---|
| Visa | 13.2 Cancelled Recurring Transaction |
| Mastercard | 4853 Cardholder Dispute (recurring) |
| American Express | C28 Cancelled Recurring Billing |
| Stripe label | subscription_canceled |
Evidence that wins it
- Renewal terms shown at signup, with the box or button they agreed to (key)
- Account record showing no cancellation before the charge date (key)
- Renewal reminder email sent before the charge
- Logins or usage after the charge date (key)
- How customers cancel (settings page, link in emails)
- Any messages with the customer
Usage after the renewal date is the strongest proof. Export login timestamps from your app or Stripe customer portal logs.
What your letter should argue
The customer agreed to recurring billing at signup, did not cancel before the renewal date, and continued to use the service after the disputed charge. Then list each piece of proof as a numbered exhibit, so the reviewer at the bank can match your words to your files.
Before you fight
- Check the respond-by date on the dispute. Late responses lose automatically.
- In the US, Stripe keeps its $15 dispute fee either way, and charges another $15 when you submit evidence, returned if you win. Work out if it's worth it.
- You get one submission. Gather everything first.
