How to win a "duplicate charge" chargeback
The customer says they were charged twice for the same thing. To win, you need to show that each charge was for a separate order, or that the duplicate was already refunded.
Reason codes
| Network | Code |
|---|---|
| Visa | 12.6.1 Duplicate Processing |
| Mastercard | 4834 Point-of-Interaction Error |
| American Express | P08 Duplicate Charge |
| Stripe label | duplicate |
Evidence that wins it
- Both order records, showing different items, dates or order numbers (key)
- Refund receipt if one charge was already refunded (key)
- Separate invoices or receipts the customer received
- Messages about the orders
If it really was a double charge and you haven't refunded it, accepting the dispute is usually cheaper than fighting.
What your letter should argue
The two charges relate to two separate purchases (or the duplicate was already refunded), so the customer has not been charged twice for the same goods. Then list each piece of proof as a numbered exhibit, so the reviewer at the bank can match your words to your files.
Before you fight
- Check the respond-by date on the dispute. Late responses lose automatically.
- In the US, Stripe keeps its $15 dispute fee either way, and charges another $15 when you submit evidence, returned if you win. Work out if it's worth it.
- You get one submission. Gather everything first.
